    A Message from ASBMR President Dr. Laura Calvi, MD – September 19, 2024

    Dear Colleagues,

    I look forward to seeing many of you in Toronto next week for the ASBMR 2024 Annual Meeting. I am so excited to take in the stellar scientific program that has been planned and share several of the innovative things in store for attendees. However, before diving into the details, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Program Committee—led by Robert Faccio, PhD (Chair), along with Nicola Napoli, MD, PhD (Clinical), Noriaki Ono, PhD (Basic), and Patricia Ducy, PhD (Translational)—as well as the hundreds of dedicated volunteers who served as abstract reviewers. Their hard work has made this meeting possible!

    This year’s scientific program features the latest advances in the bone, mineral and musculoskeletal field, including:

    • Two pre-meeting events the day before the start of the Annual Meeting on energy metabolism and rare bone disease;
    • The George D. Aurbach and Louis V. Avioli Plenary Lectures from Vadim Gladyshev, PhD and Thomas Clemens, PhD;
    • 19 meet-the-professor sessions on a range of topics with experts in our scientific field;
    • 15 symposia including some of our favorite standing sessions, such as the ASBMR/ECTS Clinical Debate, Challenge the Expert and joint sessions with many sister societies, e.g., The Endocrine Society, Orthopedic Research Society and International Federation of Musculoskeletal Societies;
    • Over 160 oral presentations and over 1,100 poster presentations over the course of four days; and the ASBMR Social Networking Event (additional registration fee) will occur on the Saturday of the meeting.

    To prepare for the Annual Meeting, you can download the meeting’s mobile app, here.

    At this year's Annual Meeting, we are excited to enhance accessibility with a range of resources for our attendees. In addition to closed captioning, we are offering accommodations such as ample seating areas with wheelchair space, lower tables for meals, ADA seating in session rooms, and easy access via escalators and elevators in both hotels and the convention center. Other features include dietary accommodations, a mother’s room, a prayer room, accessible restrooms, and access for service animals. We are committed to ensuring a welcoming and inclusive experience for everyone.

    We will continue two key innovations introduced at the 2023 Vancouver Annual meeting: the Early Stage Investigator Microphone, to prioritize questions for our Early Career members, and the Rapid Fire presentations, which we have expanded to three sessions throughout the meeting.

    We are thrilled to introduce two exciting new initiatives for this year’s Annual Meeting—Sneak-peek videos and daily ASBMR News. For the first time, registrants can access expert recordings ahead of the meeting via the mobile app or itinerary builder. These “sneak-peek” videos—10 in total—feature thought leaders in the field providing teasers of abstracts that they are most looking forward to learning more about during the Annual Meeting. The sneak-peeks span clinical, basic, and translational sciences, diving into the latest discoveries in bone, mineral, and musculoskeletal research and introducing the rationale and impact of the abstract. My thanks to all the Sneak-Peek presenters listed below, who are enhancing our preparation and excitement for our upcoming meeting!

    Additionally, each morning after the opening session, we’ll present a 15-minute ASBMR News segment, recapping the previous day's events and findings, and previewing upcoming sessions that day, including meeting trends shared by our ASBMR Paparazzi team. I want to extend special thanks to Roberta Faccio, our ASBMR News Anchor, Ben Frisch, Sun Peck, Sabashini Ramchand and Mark Wein, our ASBMR New Producers, and the exceptional early-stage investigators that make up that Basic Science, Clinical and Paparazzi ASBMR News team!! We hope the Video Sneak Peeks and the ASBMR News will become favorite features of our ASBMR Annual Meeting!

    I wish you all safe travels to Toronto and look forward to an awesome ASBMR 2024 Annual Meeting!

    Sincerely,

    Laura Calvi, MD
    ASBMR President
